The Chateau Gris castle was built in the 18th century in the middle of its 3.5 ha walled vineyard. After the vines were destroyed by phylloxera, the roof of the castle was covered with grey slate whereas tiles are traditionally used in Burgundy. The people of Nuits-Saint-Georges therefore began to refer to it as Château Gris (“grey castle”) and the name stuck. In Nuits-Saint-Georges, only 7.3 ha produce white wines, including 4.3 ha of Premier Crus. Our 0.67 ha vineyard is located on the high terraces of the hill, above the castle.

About this wine
Description & facts
Château-Gris is a castle that was built in the 18th century in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the middle of a 3.5-hectare walled vineyard. Its name comes from the grey (gris) colour of its slate roof, which is unusual in Burgundy where tiles are predominant. Its terraced vineyard, which is rather rare in Burgundy, is organic certified. It culminates at an altitude of 280 metres. The plots close to the castle are planted with pinot noir grapes, while chardonnay is grown higher up. The vines have an average age of over 40 years. The vineyard’s altitude, steep slope that faces due east, and characteristic clay-limestone soil (Bathonian stage of the Middle Jurassic) provide optimal conditions for yielding fine, elegant wines. The wines of Château Gris are bear the certified “organic wine” label.
